Bikram yoga or hot yoga consists of 26 poses practiced in a sauna-like room. The temperature is set to approximately 105 degrees. Its advocates claim that working out in these conditions increases muscle elasticity, burns fat, and enhances the body’s ability to expel toxins.
As you can imagine, hot yoga isn’t the best choice for moms-to-be. It’s extremely dangerous and may cause arrhythmia, high blood pressure, miscarriage, premature birth, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke. During a typical class, your core temperature can easily reach 104 degrees.
This graceful yet challenging type of yoga involves hundreds of poses that stimulate the mind and body. A typical session includes twists, inversions, backbends, balancing poses, and breathing exercises. Dharma yoga can be adapted to people of all ages and fitness levels. However, most poses are not safe during pregnancy. There are better alternatives available for moms-to-be.
Regardless of what yoga style you practice, avoid any poses that involve lying on your back, deep twists, deep forward bends, and inversions. These moves can harm your baby and cause pregnancy problems. Stick to prenatal yoga, hatha yoga, iyengar yoga, and other workouts that are considered safe for future moms.
